Why is manifestation a pillar of spiritual teaching? 


This is quite simply the culmination of everything to do with our life on Earth. The whole point of our incarnations is for the ‘God’ part of ourselves to know itself fully from all angles and perspectives, as we discussed in session 1. We are here to experience and explore challenging situations that we wouldn’t encounter in the environment of pure love that is our home on ‘the other side’. We are here to learn more about ourselves through negative experiences, and then to use that wisdom to create something from it to bring us abundance and joy. We are here to remember and revel in our power of creation.


Everyone wants more abundance in their lives, in fact, because we are here to constantly learn, we are programmed to always be wanting more! However, we tend to live with a feeling of lack, or assume that we have to work incredibly hard to obtain what we want. When you investigate the world of spirituality, one of the largest subjects is the law of attraction, because we are told that we are always attracting things into our life, but the trick is to consciously bring what you want into your life rather than attracting what you don’t want because you don’t know how this ‘law’ works. If you want to feel blessed, lucky and enjoy a life of abundance, then you should investigate this aspect of spirituality.



What is the Law of Attraction (LOA)?


The Law of Attraction states that our thoughts and feelings create our reality, and what we focus on is what we will manifest in our lives. Common phrases you’ll hear are ‘Like attracts like’ and ‘thoughts create things’, so if you are thinking about how unlucky you are, backing that up by recalling the examples of the bad luck you have experienced from the moment you woke up this morning, and experiencing feelings of unfairness and trepidation, you will have built up enough momentum to attract more of the same. But if you are feeling positive, looking forward to the new day and noticing all the things you appreciate around you, you will attract experiences that will cause you to feel even more appreciative. 


Here’s an example of what a manifesting process might look like.

  1. Notice the situation. It’s easy to plod along in an uncomfortable situation without actually stopping to consider a change. You have been feeling badly about your current job situation for several months and putting up with it, so you take some time in reflection/meditation; stepping out of being immersed in it to identify the emotions  that it has triggered and why. You feel depressed, unmotivated and struggling with a difficult relationship with your manager. 

  2. Identify your preferred experience. You consider the opposite of the negative emotions to identify what you want instead;  a job that uses your skills and excites you, where you feel you’re making a difference to others in a happy, supportive team, ideally with a higher salary. 

  3. Set an intention. Here’s where you send out your instruction to the universe. Once you have clarified what you want in step 2, it’s good to get a picture in your head of the ideal situation, even if the details are general. It’s being clear about what you want and letting the universe know that this isn’t a passing whim but a direction you have firmly decided you want to take yourself. Use the techniques mentioned below.

  4. Release and relax. The most difficult step! When you set an intention, a request to the universe, the answer is always ‘yes’, but it’s hard to relax and trust that it is on its way.

  5. Tend your vibration.  You may have to wait for divine timing with patience, trust and confidence. If your manifestation isn't showing up or you feel or do some inner work to release any beliefs you have that are blocking your abundance. Other than that, 



The two main ways to attract what you want

Manifesting teachers describe two different ways which I will call general attraction and focused attraction.


General attraction

This is a method where you concentrate on 

  1. Keeping your mood/vibrational frequency as high as possible, and practising being the best version of yourself that you identified in session 2.

  2. Allowing yourself to listen to your intuition, acting on your hunches from your guides as explained in session 3 and following whatever course of action feels good in the present moment.

  3. Being open to what happens, getting into the flow of wherever life leads you without judgement, and letting your adventure unfold.


Michael Singer is a great example of focusing on his mood and intuition, saying ‘yes’ to whatever came his way, and then life sent him experiences that were beyond his dreams and expectations. The fact is that if we are feeling as good as we can, and being as happy and content as possible, the law of attraction states that we will attract more of that. You don’t need to focus on a particular life goal if it doesn’t suit you. Whatever it is you want, be it love, wealth, a career opportunity, a change of living space etc., it is always because, as Abraham Hicks says, you believe you will feel better in the having of it. So if you are already being the person you will be when your life goal manifests, and practising feeling joyful, grateful and fulfilled in advance, you will assume a level of trust in the power of the universe and your goals will materialise without having to concentrate on them.


Focused attraction

This is a good method if you want to experience ‘having your hands in the clay’, being a deliberate creator who single-mindedly chooses something to bring into your experience and enjoys experimenting with your creative powers to draw it in and manifest in your reality. 


All the manifestation experts say that you first have to feel and act like the person you will be when you have what you wish for, so that your frequency will match what you want and it will be attracted to you.  So if you want a new job you have to feel all the feelings associated with having been offered the job, and act as if you have the job. You might let go of all the frustration you have with your current job, completing any tasks you want to achieve as if you are tidying up loose ends before handing them over to the next person. You might feel relief and anticipation for your next job, visualising your first day. Perhaps you will start walking tall, acting more confidently, not letting petty irritations bother you. 


Here are some other techniques for focused attraction - use them only if it feels good to do so, because it should not cause negative feelings by making you yearn for your goal and feel the lack of it even more - that will keep it away.

  1. Get a clear picture about what it is you want to attract so that the universe has a clear instruction of what to manifest. You don’t have to list every single detail of what you want but a clear intention, put out to the universe as an authoritative command that you then let go for the universe to take action. You are a magnificent creator, a piece of God, so get used to the idea of having the power within yourself. Don’t ask or plead, there’s no need, you have the authority to have what you like. ‘I want a parking place outside the shop, thank you’, or  ‘I want a job that pays more than I earn now, that is more fulfilling and is nearer to home, thank you.’ And because the universe likes to delight you, you can add ‘....or better’ to the picture allowing the manifestation to exceed your expectations.

  2. Create a vision board to get excited about your goal, choosing images that fill in as much detail as possible about your desired end state, and what life will look like when your goal manifests.

  3. Spend time daily (or even several times a day if you enjoy it) to immerse yourself in the end state, visualising what life will be like. This is more than a daydream, because you will try to inhabit your end state using all your five senses and creating the emotions you will have when your goal becomes reality. If you want a new car, take a moment when you are driving in your current car, imagining your hands at the wheel of the new one, as if you are driving your preferred car and feeling the enjoyment of it. Or if you want to attract a new partner, imagine you are going on a date with them tonight, and feel the relaxed anticipation, or picture the background sounds in the restaurant, the taste of the food and the conversation.

  4. Actually prepare for the arrival of your manifestation where you can. Clear the clutter in your home if you want to move house. Research how you will allocate the wealth from your lottery win. 

  5. Relax as if it is on its way. Behave as if you ordered it online and it is already yours, without worrying whether it will turn up. Turn any doubtful thoughts of ‘I can’t have it’ into ‘I can have it’, because whatever we have been inspired to want in our life, God has already said yes to. There is no need to cling to the goal or keep reminding the universe that you want it.


When setting an intention for a particular goal, we are encouraged to say “ I want [the goal]... or something better.” This is because the universe has a wonderful habit of over-delivering and delighting us with more than we asked for. 


A word about attracting a partner. If you are looking for love and want to attract a specific person into your life, it may be better to invoke the ‘something better’ intention. It is possible that the person you desire is on a different life path to you. The law of attraction does not work like a cosmic tug of war, where you try to draw the person to you by the force of your technique. What you actually want is someone who loves you wholeheartedly, treats you with respect and feels pure joy and contentment in your company. Be open to attracting a different person that brings you an even better experience than the specific person you have identified for yourself, especially if that person is someone with whom you have had an unsatisfactory relationship with in the past. The universe wants the very best for you, and it may be a different outcome to what you are expecting!


If you find yourself feeling downhearted when using the focused attraction techniques because it highlights the contrast with your current reality, switch to general attraction, where you turn your attention away from a specific wish, to just honing your mood/frequency to the happiest state you can.


Set your frequency


As is often the case in the spiritual world, everything starts with looking inward - we have to match our frequency with the frequency of what we want to attract. Everyone has a dominant vibration, so if we want to attract things into our lives that make us joyful, we should habitually be vibrating at that frequency. Here’s how we can align ourselves to produce a coherent and consistent signal to manifest what we want. 

  • Control the inner dialogue - notice and stop critical thoughts, turning the narrative towards that of  a best friend; supportive, never judgemental, cheering us on. You will notice that the more you turn your attention away from critical thoughts, the more they will simply fade away over time. Don’t try  to fight your negative thoughts, because that is concentrating on them which will bring more. Just notice them, maybe understand why you are feeling them, announce that you don’t want to think about them any more, set them free to move out of your vicinity and replace them with something positive - it is likely to be the direct opposite of what you were thinking!

  • Practise your best self - keep in mind the picture you created in session 2 of what the best version of you is, and embody it as often as you can.

  • Remove the blockages that drag you down. How? Take a few minutes to step outside of any negative experiences and objectively consider what it has been sent to teach us, because we are always being shown what is blocking us from our path of abundance. When you feel bad or uncomfortable, gently ask yourself why, acknowledge the reasons that are revealed to you, and then release the emotion out of your body and back to the universe. Announce that you have learned what you can from it and now you will move ‘out of the classroom’ and into a reality free of that blockage.

  • Radiate the most positive vibration possible in any given moment - when we are feeling low, reaching for a better feeling thought. Ask yourself ‘how can I feel a bit happier right now?’

  • Avoid the negative influences of others. Their energy might be of a lower frequency and you may find yourself being pulled downwards too. Use the techniques in session 4 to refuse to align yourself, or imagine yourself protected in a giant glass bell jar maintaining your positive vibration.



Manage the gap between your current reality and the one you want to inhabit


The biggest hurdle to attracting your goal will be the constant reminder that what you passionately desire is nowhere to be seen in your reality. It will cause you to falter, doubt your power, especially if you have been waiting for some time. After all, it is hard to stay in a frequency of happiness and exhilaration about what you do not have yet - your mind will start telling you that you’re being naive or foolish pretending you have something you do not. When your current reality seems too large and has too big a hold of you, the following perspectives may help to shift your mindset, because this reality isn’t necessarily an accurate predictor of what is to come.


Old news

Abraham Hicks says that your current life should be seen as ‘old news’ or ‘chewing gum that we’ve chewed all the flavour from’. What you’re seeing is nothing more than the results of what your dominant vibration and thoughts have attracted into your life so far. This has no bearing on what can happen in the future, because from this moment on you can start to manifest more of what you want. Don’t look at the past for evidence of what you are likely to get in future because what has happened is irrelevant if you’re thinking differently now. You can look at your present, appreciate the good things you have attracted and thank the results you do not like for indicating where your vibration point has been. Use that as the jumping off point for clarifying what you do want from now on. All your power is in the present moment. The past no longer exists and has no influence if you don’t want it to; and the future is only the result of what you’re doing now. It is exciting to think that from this very moment you can be shaping a more positive, vibrant future.


Step into your preferred parallel reality

Scientists of quantum physics are increasingly discussing the possibility that there are infinite parallel realities all happening at the same time, and spiritual teachers tell us that we have the power to step into a reality of our choice. In addition to the techniques mentioned above, you might like to loosen the dominance that this reality has in your mind by seeing it as not permanent, but rather the reality that you have grown out of. Imagine that your preferred reality is almost overlaid on this one and you are seeing it like double vision. Take some time to metaphorically step sideways into your preferred reality and walk around in it for a few minutes. Be as if your goal has just happened and you’re seeing things from the eyes of someone at the crossroads of you having received your good news and your life being about to change for the better.

 

The video game

When you are researching the law of attraction you will hear teachers referring to us as players of a video game. As you learned in session 1, we incarnate here as a way to learn and evolve, and many people who have near death experiences describe the feeling of ‘waking up’ or ‘coming home’ when they return to Source, with our existence as spirit being the reality and life on Earth being a kind of simulation. When we enter a state of meditation as discussed in session 2 we are stepping out of the game, connecting with our soul, remembering that we are the player at the controls rather than the avatar. It’s all about stepping out of the emotions in a difficult moment and setting an intention to direct ourselves along a different course of action. We have far more control of our life and outcomes than we think. You may like to set an intention to play in a different part of the game where you encounter the love of your life or get a great new job. Decide that you have learned what you can of this stage of your game and you have gained enough skill to move up a level into a more fulfilling part of the game experience. Feel the freedom of being able to turn your life elsewhere.



Teachers of the Law of Attraction


There are many teachers to choose from, but here are some of the biggest names:


Abraham Hicks

Esther Hicks channels a group of entities known collectively as Abraham, who many regard as the most influential LOA teacher of all time. She has written nine books and for over 20 years she has travelled the world conducting speaking engagements where Abraham discusses ways we can attract what we want by paying attention to our vibration and following the five steps of manifestation (see the recommended resources below). Abraham’s message is very simple: when you align with the energy of your desires, they will manifest easily and effortlessly. The message is delivered in a warm, sometimes funny and ironic conversational style. 


Dr Wayne Dyer

Known affectionately by his fans as “the father of motivation”, Wayne Dyer was an internationally renowned motivational speaker who had a difficult upbringing that honed his strength of character and determination to attract what he wanted to his life. After obtaining a doctorate in educational counselling he began to explore the spiritual aspects of human experience, becoming a guru of the law of attraction. He died in 2015 but his teachings and the passion that comes across in his books and videos still resonates strongly.


Neville Goddard

Neville was born in 1905 and died in 1972. He was a spiritual mystic, beginning his public speaking career in 1938, and as portable recording equipment became more commonplace in the 1950s there is a lot of material of his lectures available on the internet. You will hear many current experts on the law of attraction reference his teachings because it was in the era of Neville and Napoleon Hill that the law of attraction started to enter the public imagination. Perhaps most iconic of Neville’s teachings are his techniques for helping visualise your goals. He was one of the first teachers to talk about the powerful combination of feeling into your desire and committing those desires to paper, setting your intention by writing out your goals as if they have already happened for you.


Dr Joe Dispenza

Dr Joe has a background in the medical world, specifically the chiropractic specialism. His post graduate training included the fields of neuroscience and neuroplasticity, quantitative electroencephalogram (QEEG) measurements, epigenetics, mind-body medicine, and brain/heart coherence. As a researcher, lecturer, author, and corporate consultant, his interest lies in demystifying the mystical so that people have all the tools within their reach to make measurable changes in their lives. He has conducted many tests into how we can align our body and spiritual centre to achieve a coherent spiritual vibration and attract astonishing things to our experience, and his teachings are full of energy and inspiration.


Louise Hay

What sets Louise Hay apart from many of the other LOA teachers is that she focused on using the law of attraction for manifesting vibrant health and loving relationships, more so than wealth and financial abundance. Her morning and evening gratitude meditations are great reminders of the power of setting strong intentions for the day, and appreciating all that is already well in our lives.

This interview, hosted by Alex Ferrari on the Next Level Soul channel will appeal to those who want some scientific rigour to their spiritual learning. Anthony Peake wanted to write a book, and began by investigating what happens chemically in the human brain when it is in an epileptic episode. This led on to incorporate what happens to our bodies and brain when we die, which progressed  to the exploration of how life after death could be the ‘real world’ whilst we are only experiencing a quantum simulation. He is turning the perspective of how we think of life and death on its head.
